Director of Business Development

We worked with ...

... a newly appointed Director of Business Development (UK). Focusing on developing the right strategy and bringing the best out in his team were key issues for him:

‘The accelerated transition programme provided guidance and helped me to define the direction I needed to be going. It wasn't instruction or education but it was very specifically tailored for my situation.

This was a radical change from the kind of role I'd previously  had, and the kind of skills I needed to develop were very different. Coaching helped me identify specific things to focus on to achieve what I needed to in the role.

I realised I had to set specific time aside to think about strategy and not just fire fighting - thinking about the longer term and being more structured about the way I work. By thinking strategically about what I should be doing I made sure I didn't waste my time doing jobs that were of no value.

This guides the team too - we don't just pick up the phone but we think about what we are trying to achieve and we understand the context of the prospect.

Last year we spent too much time working on leads that weren't of any real substance. Now it's easier to qualify things out.

It's been a number of years since I've directly managed other people and it's important to get that right from the outset. The programme gave me the opportunity to reflect on whether I was taking the right approach with my team. I feel very strongly that I've now got the right approach and I feel very positive about it.

The programme gave me an opportunity to get an outwards view of the way I work. I had someone to help and to guide me - there were a number of things which we have talked about which I wouldn't talk to anyone in the organisation about. The new approaches, new ideas and challenging what I do were essential to me.

The flexibility of the programme is crucial. It's not a standard programme - it fits in with my needs and the timing of those.

Coaching is a rare commodity - it is like a journey and it doesn't just end with the coaching.'
